Today, there are a number of options for patients who require dental braces. From traditional metal braces to invisible options, there are solutions for any need.
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most common type of braces and the type most often thought of when discussing the need for braces. Today’s metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel. They use metal brackets and archwires to guide teeth into place. Thankfully, metal braces are more comfortable today than they’ve ever been. We even offer the option of colored elastics for a unique and fun smile.
For patients who have cosmetic concerns about the look of metal braces, there are several alternatives available. One option is Ceramic Braces. Made of clear materials, these braces are much less visible on the teeth and thus may be preferred by adults and older teens. Ceramic braces are larger than metal braces and more brittle. Thus they’re more often used on the upper front teeth rather than lower teeth. Any patient considering this option must be ready to pay a little extra attention to their oral hygiene to avoid any issues.
Self-Ligating braces are similar to traditional braces with one big exception- they do not require the use of elastics (rubber bands). Instead they use a clip to help the archwire guide the tooth into place. The clip reduces the amount of pressure placed on the tooth and without elastic to replace, patients will have fewer appointments. Self-Ligating braces are the same size as metal braces and are available in metal, ceramic or clear brackets.
You may not need the expense of braces. Some corrections can be achieved with the use of clear aligners. While braces use metal wires or brackets to achieve results, aligners use a gradual force to control tooth movement. Aligners are made of acrylic, not metal. They are invisible, removable, and comfortable. This makes eating, flossing, and brushing your teeth less of a hassle. Not only can aligners save you on cost over traditional braces but their clear nature makes them less visible than metal braces as well.
You may not know that there are braces that are hidden behind the teeth and therefore can’t be seen. Lingual Braces are a terrific option for athletes, models, and others. These metal braces are customized specifically for the patient’s mouth to match the unique shape of their teeth.
